Karen P. Buitrago

Karen P. Buitrago is an associate in the firm's Family Law Department. Ms. Buitrago handles a variety of family law issues, including divorce, child custody and visitation, child and spousal support, property characterization and division, domestic violence restraining order, and complex, high-asset matters.

Ms. Buitrago received her J.D. from Golden Gate University School of Law in December 2009. During law school, she emphasized her studies and work experience on family law. She received a Witkin Award for Academic Excellence in Family Law Practice.  She held a judicial externship at the San Francisco Superior Court - Unified Family Court. She worked at Bay Area Legal Aid assisting domestic violence survivors in pursuing restraining orders. She was also a law clerk and then attorney for a prominent San Francisco based family law attorney assisting with high-profile, high-asset and complex family law matters.

Prior to joining Flicker, Kerin, Kruger & Bissada LLP, Ms. Buitrago worked at the Justice and Diversity Center of the Bar Association of San Francisco. Ms. Buitrago was the supervising attorney overseeing and litigating highly contentious child custody and visitation cases under the Sargent Shriver Custody Project.  Several years before this, Ms. Buitrago was the supervising attorney for another Justice and Diversity Center project: Family Law Assisted Self-Help. Ms. Buitrago worked in conjunction with the San Francisco Unified Family Court in assisting self-represented litigants with all their family law issues. Ms. Buitrago also spearheaded and managed the Unified Family Court's Self-Represented Litigant's calendar where she also helped mediate settlements.

Prior to becoming a family law attorney, Ms. Buitrago utilized the knowledge she gained in pursuing her bachelor's degree in Business Administration with a finance concentration by working as an Assistant Controller at a multi-state steel manufacturing company.

In her free time. Ms. Buitrago enjoys spending time with her husband, two daughters and their Japanese Chin. Her hobbies include Spartan races, running, boxing, hiking and reading.
